When Gideon and Harrow at last reveal their final secrets to one another, rendering themselves vulnerable and knowable to one another, they do it in a pool. First of a proposed trilogy, Gideon the Ninth is a freaky science-fantasy-horror-romance mash-up that owes its innards to M.A.S.H. We were all told pretty ceaselessly about what achievement looks like. You can be present in a moment, even an emotionally charged one, but also somewhere else entirely. While Gideon finds a way to turn that betrayal briefly into a transcendent sacrifice, the power dynamics of her relationship with Harrow add an icky kind of subtext to that sacrifice. And Muir pretty much pulls it off because she makes the choice to use it to pay off on an emotional level as well as a plot level.
