Qualifications

• Must have at least 24 months in recovery from a substance use disorder.
• High school diploma or higher required.
• One year of experience working in the recovery field preferred.
• Certified Recovery Peer Specialist (CRPS) certification preferred; Flagler OARS will provide training for qualified candidates who are not yet certified.
• Working knowledge of substance use disorder treatment and recovery systems.
• Demonstrated commitment to the recovery community and respect for all pathways to recovery.
• Ability to appropriately use lived recovery experience to build authentic peer relationships.
• Must be able to pass a Level 2 fingerprint background check.
• Must have reliable transportation and be able to use a personal vehicle for work-related travel in St. Augustine and/or Palm Coast.

Position Summary

The Peer Support Specialist provides peer-based support, education, mentoring, advocacy, and encouragement to individuals and families affected by substance use disorder. The Specialist uses lived recovery experience to serve as a positive role model and help individuals develop self-directed recovery goals, strengthen community connections, and build the supports needed for long-term recovery.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide peer support and recovery education throughout all stages of recovery.
• Use lived experience to provide hope, encouragement, and positive recovery modeling.
• Help individuals identify their strengths, interests, goals, and barriers to recovery.
• Coach individuals in developing and pursuing self-directed Recovery Plans.
• Promote self-advocacy and keep the individual’s goals, needs, and voice central to their recovery.
• Connect individuals and families with community resources, mutual-support groups, educational and vocational opportunities, healthcare, professional services, and other supports.
• Accompany individuals to community resources when appropriate and help identify strategies to overcome barriers to participation.
• Develop and maintain relationships with community organizations and service providers.
• Provide follow-up and re-engagement support to individuals after they leave services.
• Maintain accurate documentation, project logs, reports, and required records.
• Develop, implement, and promote community recovery education and training opportunities.
• Collaborate with agency staff and community professionals to advance recovery-oriented services.
• Follow agency policies and all requirements of funding sources.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Peer Supervisor or Leadership Team.
